Woah! It's been a long time since I've been on here! I hope that you're a fan of the Face Book Page so you've been staying in the know during these website lulls! It's been a crazy month! First, my whole family came down with the worst flu yet (yes, even worse than the one we got last January! Eek!) That bugger we just couldn't get to go away! We were in lock down for over two weeks! Then we were all healed up just in time to pack and go home for the holidays where we have contracted something else! Hopefully this bug will not be as bad, nor last as long as the last. (Please keep us in your prayers!) We had a blessed Christmas with family and friends. The kids really enjoyed themselves, and the Hubby and I were able to sneak out one night to catch up with some old friends! I hope that you all have had a wonderful Christmas and Holiday season and are ready to celebrate the New Year!

Local Business Spotlight: Kindermusik with Ellen Southern Pines, NC Family & Child Photographer

This month, the spotlight is on a beautiful mama named Ellen! She teaches the Kindermusik class in downtown Southern Pines, along with her little cutie pie Knox! I met with Ellen and her son one warm Monday afternoon to get cupcakes, but unfortunately they were closed! So instead, we just headed over to the park for some play time!

Hi, Ellen! Can you tell me a little about yourself!?

I am a wife & mother first - 16 month old son, Knox and new baby on the way in May! I have studied Creative Writing, Early Childhood Education and Special Education and have worked with children on and off since I was 15. Most recently working as a preschool teacher and working one-on-one with children with special needs. This is my first semester teaching Kindermusik and I feel like this is my calling!

How’d you become a business owner?

I decided to start a Kindermusik studio because I wanted to continue working with children while making my own schedule and being able to spend as much time with my son as possible.

What’s Kindermusik all about?

Kindermusik is a parent-child music and movement class that is all about family, fun, creativity and exploration of music. Classes are full of research-based activities that enhance cognitive, emotional, social, fine motor, gross motor and behavioral development for young children through music. Kindermusik is about educating parents as well as children, and providing opportunities for continued growth and exploration outside of the classroom.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching Kindermusik?

Definitely getting to witness the special bond that each parent and child have with each other. I love watching parents' faces as they see their children learning and making connections.

What challenges have you faced or overcome?

I think any new business owner faces the same challenges - Attempting to reach your customer base was a big one for me - I thought it would be a lot easier for me to reach parents since I am one myself. I know where I go to look for information about these types of activities, so that is where I advertised, but it's harder than I thought to reach all of the people you want to.

How do you balance being a mom and running your business?

This one is easy for me because Knox attends my classes with me! Another reason I love teaching Kindermusik is getting to experience it with him - and seeing how much he loves it makes any challenges totally worth it! I also like having him with me because it makes it easier for me to demonstrate to the parents how to best participate in an activity, also he is a great guinea pig! :)

Any business secrets or strategies you’d like to share?

I think Facebook is a great tool for business owners. The free business page is a plus but also their ad campaigns are affordable, so precisely directed towards your desired audience and they provide lots of feedback.

My older two kids and I met with Kim at a local park to set up her booth and paint our faces! My kids were so excited, it was all they talked about for an entire week! Kim, can you please tell me a little about yourself?

I am a nature lover from Davis California originally, but live in Pinehurst, NC now.....I have an adult Son, Andrew..and dog Bailey. I have almost reached getting my Bachelors Degree in Secondary Ed/Nursing and work as a Home Health Caregiver, as well as painting up people at local festivities.

How'd you come about being a business owner?

Well, when I moved here to Pinehurst, I saw that there was a need for children's activities, and then went forth to the local Parks to extend my concerns and abilities to them throughout the community. I did so well, that I started doing Face Painting. People love it!

What's your business, Fancy Faces 4 U, all about?

Face Painting/Body art. I paint freehand designs onto people. Whatever comes to their mind I do my best to get it on them.

What’s your favorite thing about your business?

love to see their faces and hear them when they see themselves in the mirror. I love to make people happy.

How do you balance being a mom and running your business?

Well, I balance it by making time for my family of course!

I am in LOVE with this floating canvas that I recently ordered of munchkin #4. I literally can't keep my hands off of it. It's so soft!

I just love how this looks hanging on my wall. This is a 12x12 on a 3/4" back.

The cool thing about these is that once you hang them (which takes 10 seconds thanks to the predrilled holes in the block!) you can stand back and look at your "floating" art!

Our first featured business is none other than the farm that supplies our eggs and almost all of the veggies that my family consumes each week! Ginny, can you please tell me a little about yourself!?

We're originally from the Pittsburgh PA area--Neville Island. 11 miles south of Pittsburgh in the middle of the Ohio River. Dave is from Glenfield PA--right across the river from Neville Island. Dave spent 20 years in the USMC and most of that time we were at Cherry Point,NC. He would be sent overseas and I stayed where we were with our children. (USMC does not have accompanied tours!) We lived on the NC coast--Newport--until we moved to Lillington in 1997.

What’s your business all about?

We offer fresh, free-range brown eggs, local honey, and a multitude of home-grown, hand-picked seasonal herbs and veggies that are grown either in the fields or by hydroponics. These products include English burpless cukes, peppers, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, eggplant, zucchini, onions, potatoes, hydroponic lettuce, kale, and tomatoes at the Farmer's Market. We grow our vegetables without the use of any persistent pesticides or herbicides. After tasting our fresh produce, you'll be disappointed by the selection at your local grocery store!

How’d you come about being a business owner?

We have owned many businesses over the years. We had a light construction business, owned a pet shop, owned a tanning and toning salon, owned a Harley shop, owned a lawn care business, and here of late have a produce farm. With the encouragement of the Extension agent in Lillington, Dave formed and was the market manager of the Lillington Farmer's Market for about 11 years. He also formed and was the market manager of the Moore County Farmer's Market for about 10 years.

What’s your favorite thing about your business?

The thing we enjoy most in our current business are the friendships we have formed with our customers.

How do you balance being a mom and running your business?

Our son is our business partner!

Where can we find you?

We attend Moore County Market in Southern Pines, NC on Morganton Road on Thursday from 9AM to 1PM. We participate in this market all year round. At present, this is the only market Dave and I attend. Our son, Scott, attends Cary Downtown Farmer's Market located in the parking lot at 744 East Chatham Street in Chatham Square on Tuesday from 3PM to 6PM and on Saturday from 8AM to 12:30PM. He attends this market all year round on Saturday 8AM to 12:30PM.

Fun Friday (For Photogs!)Aberdeen, NC Photographer

Here's a little something fun for all you photogs out there! Ever wondered how to find out how many photographs your camera has taken (aka shutter clicks, shutter count, etc)!? I killed the shutter on my last camera about 2 years ago, which means that I took over 50k images! (Yes, that's 50 THOUSAND!) On my new camera body, though, because I have just recently opened business here in North Carolina, my shutter count is much much much less.

If you have a Mac... right click on your most recent image and open it in Preview, you can then click on tools, inspector, then click on the bubble with the "!", exif, and look for "image number"! Easy!

If you don't have a Mac, you can do it in just a few steps:
1. Take your most recent image and upload it to your flickr account just as it is, sooc.
2. Click on the image you just loaded and find on the right sidebar where it has the name of your camera. Click on it.
3. You'll then be looking at a screen of Exif data like this:

Scroll almost to the bottom where you'll find "Shutter count." As you can see here, mine's on 7564.

That's it! How many times has your shutter clicked!? Have fun playing with your camera! ;)

First Day of School PhotosSouthern Pines, NC Photographer

The summer's over, the backpacks are loaded, and the bus is on its way! Nothing left to do now but take those "first day of school" pictures! Here are some tips for taking the best photos of your kids this year!

1. Avoid direct sunlight. Take your picture under your front porch, in the shade of a nearby tree, or in the shade of the school bus (if the driver will give you a minute!). Shade shouldn't be hard to find since your child's bus is probably picking them up at the crack of dawn anyway!

2.Switch up the angles. Take pictures of your kids from standing, kneeling, and maybe even get down low to capture that big yellow bus way up above their heads in the background! Just remember when taking pictures up, try not to shoot straight up the subject's nose! (Eew, boogies!)

3. Use what you've got. That brand new backpack is sure to impress! Try getting your child to turn around at an angle with their back facing you and then look over their shoulder at the camera! You can also show off those new shoes, the lunchbox, or the rad haircut by focusing on it in the photos.

4. Remember to have fun! The best way to get genuine smiles from your kids (especially this early in the morning) might be to have them say something silly ("say stinky monkey!"), give them a tickle, or get them to make a goofy face (following those goofy faces will be pure joy, so get ready to take the shot after the silly face)!

All you need to do is pick up a home decor magazine or scroll through a webpage to be wowed by some amazing art displays. And if you're like me, it won't take too much perusing for you to feel the need for new works of art in your own home. Thankfully, there are just a few steps in order to obtain your own custom family masterpieces. First, seek out your photographer. Find an artist who creates images that you enjoy; images that you could see displayed on your own walls. Second, complete your session! That's the fun part! Make sure you wear clothing and use accessories that compliment your personality and style, but won't date your art. Third, and finally, you can put those ideas to work! Choose your most loved images and your favorite ways to display them, whether it's on canvas, in custom frames by The Organic Bloom, or on standouts. And always remember, it's never a bad thing to go too big! This is the difference between an 8x10 and a 20x30. There's just no comparison!

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing the beautiful M. She's from Germany. And has a cool accent. She and her husband are about to have their first baby- Koen. And she's absolutely glowing.

We wandered around the golf course for a bit, stopping in shady spots and swatting at bugs between snap shots.

Senior Outfit Inspiration Sandhills, NC High School Senior Photographer

Hey guys and gals! If you need a little inspiration... just check out your favorite online stores! You'll find tons of cool outfits to suit your personal style. You can also take a look at my pinterest account to find even more inspiration!

Here are a few other DOs and DON'Ts on what-to-wear:

~ Do bring a variety of outfits to choose from to your session. Pack for your session like you would for vacation: some casual every-day wear (jeans and a fave shirt) as well as something to go out on the town in (maybe a tie, a suit jacket or something with a little sparkle!)

~Don't be afraid to show your true self through your style and clothing. Rock the plaid, bright colors, patterns and have fun!

~Do try and avoid: clothes that are too tight (no one wants to see your muffin top!)

clothes that are too loose (we do want to see your natural shape!)
large logos
words on clothing (in almost all cases)
stripes (yes, they really do make you look wider!)
patterns that are distracting from your beautiful face

~Don't forget to dress in complete outfits! Make sure you've got everything in your bag from your hat or scarf all the way down to your shoes. Accessorize like nobody's business.

~Do clean up your nails. (Guys, too!) Take off that ratty old chipped polish! File those broken claws down! Stop chewing on your cuticles for goodness sakes!

~Don't decide to get a hair cut the day before your session (or month depending on how slow your hair grows)! If you're thinking about changing up your 'do... please don't 'do it until after your session! It's just better that way in case you hate it! Make sure you have plenty of time for a fix!

~Do shave before your session! The 5 o'clock shadow and the day-old stubble will not be processed out of your images during editing... so unless you want it there permanently... shave it off! (And psst... guys, if you have a patchy beard that you like... trust me... shave it.)

~Do wear some makeup. Even if you're usually au natural... please apply some light powder and mascara to even out skin tones, cut down on shine, and draw attention to your eyes. Please bring along your arsenal to change up your makeup (and hair, too!) for a different look for different outfits!

~Do wear contacts to your session instead of glasses. If you must wear your glasses, or if you'd like them in your photos, please wear contacts and pop out the lenses from your frames (you might want to take them to a pro to get this done), or purchase or borrow a pair of lens-less frames. Glare from eyeglasses is just not very pretty in photos.

~Don't come to your session unprepared!!! A few days before your session, get all of your outfits together, laid out, look at them, envision them on you, or even try them on for a friend! You can also email me quick pics of your outfits so I have an idea of what your style is! Maybe I'll have an idea for a great accessory or something that would really make your outfit pop!

Oh My Goodness. WHERE has the last month GONE!!?

Oh, that's right, it went from Okinawa to Tokyo, Oahu, LA, DC, Alabama, NC, and Va... That's riiiiiight!

Life's been super crazy and it is finally settling in. I'm taking a hiatus from the business for a while longer... at least until things settle into a normal routine... and I'm homeschooling one of the little ones... so that might not be for a while!!

After seeing these photos from a few weeks ago, everyone wants their little girls photographed by the sea wall! I have to admit, I want my little girl photographed by the seawall, too! ;)

So we headed to Sunabe and prayed for the rain to allow us enough time today to snap off a few shots. And it did! Cloud cover was awesome, and it stopped raining just long enough to get this

And then mom went home and D and I went on a little walk. We saw all kinds of people and cars, and she liked looking out for all the dog poo. (Oh to be a four-year-old again...)

I don't normally do sepia toned images, but I think this one was perfect and the sepia really sets the mood.

When mom and baby M arrived to the park, mister M was sleeping. But he woke up, and after a little fit, he was all smiles. This kid's a character if I ever saw one.

Baby M had me laughing (like rolling on the ground laughing) the entire session.

He loved playing in the sand... Eating the sand... Choking on the sand.

When mom and I tried to get him to look back over his shoulder, he sat there, looking straight ahead, smiling his mischievous smile and raising his little expressive eye brows... that little stinker.

R emailed me a few weeks ago to schedule a session for her 3 children. She loved the pic of Baby G in the guitar case and wanted a shot of her 1-year-old son in it. (And we got a cute one, don't you know!)

Her other two kids are both girls. The older T, a beautiful young girl who loves her younger siblings, and cutie C, who is fighting for her busy momma's attention in full force! C reminded me of my own little one, who only wants pictures taken of her when I'm taking a pic of someone else! What is it about 4 year olds that makes them so strong willed (and freaking ADORABLE!?) Who could get mad at this face!?

She liked looking at all the different shisas. The one peeing gave her a good chuckle!

I saw a pile of brooms in a corner and just couldn't resist this pose.

Newborn Studio

Praise the Lord, baby J is home! This tiny little guy was born 9 weeks early and spent a long time in the NICU. Lots of prayers and skill of doctors have brought this cutie into his own bed! Momma C brought him into the studio today for a fun (pee, poop, feeding, photo) session.

Tiny J loved my floofy posing pillow. He didn't want to move out of it!

He has the tiniest little hands and feet.

His hair is like silk. You just can't beat a new baby swirl. (And if you look closely, you'll see those peachy fuzzy shoulders!)

Baby G 6 Months On location

My good friends are back together again, and that makes me happy. It also makes me happy that I get to photograph them (again. Click here for previous sessions). Baby G is such a cute little chunker. I just want to eat his chubby legs.

He's more of a coffee and doughnuts kind of guy, so we got up at the crack of dawn for a session this morning.

Momma says that he'd been up since before 5am. But you'd never guess that he was tired in these photos!

These two have been in the states for the last few months, so It's been a while since I've seen them. Baby G is growing sooo fast!

Extracurricular activities: I love to hike and I love to be with friends (my best friend is kiya lol!). I also love to take pictures. I was in photography all last year with a really cool teacher and I learned some pretty nifty things! ...

I love being a cheer leader! I also play piano. I have been playing for eight years. Almost as long as I have been singing! Ive been singing since I was super young. I love music! I am in the Kubasaki choir.

Sarina is also a self-proclaimed academic: I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I love school but I do enjoy most of my classes.

Future: I will be going to college here at Maryland for one year to get my 2 year degree. After that I hope to go back to my dream college Appalachian State University. I want to be a music teacher. The schools could always use a music teacher. (What an awesome goal!)

Shoes Sarina has on: If I could get away with wearing my rainbow flip flops everyday of the year here... I would.

Favorite Restaurant: One of the reasons that Kiya and I get along so well is that we both like to eat. She is definitely rubbing off on me! That is now one of my favorite past times! I really really like the sushi-go-rounds. The first time I walked in to one here, I was in utter amazement! There was raw fish which I hadn’t had a good bit of in a while and it was just the coolest thing to see! I went with my boyfriend the first time and it was so much fun!

Ahhh... the salty smell of the ocean, the oven-like heat, slow paced island life... this is it, man... this is the life.

So I'm back to beautiful semi-sunny Okinawa after a month long hiatus. And, I must say, that I truly missed my little apartment and my day-to-day schedule. And, I missed you, my friends!

I'm almost unpacked, and I am SO excited for what I've got in store this month! Free senior sessions, some family shoots, and some uber-cool sessions at the hospital! So stay tuned!!!

Mom let me take the boys out on our shoot by myself, and when I asked them to be daring and climb up on the jacks, they told me they weren't allowed. What good boys!

While shooting, Bailey and her mom were walking by. Her mom said that we needed to get a shot with the boys on either side of her blonde beauty. I think this one turned out really nice. She is a bombshell.

I Just put up my first gallery at Cafe & Aroma T's in Yomitan! I have some of my local prints there as well as a few shots from clients. Please come by and enjoy some of Keiko's fine cooking, a beautiful view of the ocean, and some art! Keiko cooks a little of everything from curry to omlets and garlic chicken. It's so good you'll be coming back for more! I go there at least once a week for dessert and tea!

Well, this here little man J is about 9 weeks and oh-so-adorable... with baby blue eyes, and hair that's turning red, this half Korean baby is sure to get some smiles. He was so cuddly and just so sweet, I wanted to eat him up. Thanks, J and M for hanging out with me today, and I'll see you again for the other half of your session in a week or so! Just wanted to share a Cherry Blossom image from Tokyo with you! The trees there were so different. They were ginormous with dark bark, pink buds and white flowers. Oh so beautiful. When the wind blew, it was like it was snowing in the sun. This shot is SOOC, that rich blue background was really the color of the skies!

Couple On location

This is going to be a sneak-peek heavy post. I had the pleasure of meeting some clients tonight for a couples session. I have been looking forward to today's session since W contacted me last week. She and I must have sent each other a hundred emails, so I felt as if I'd known her for years and we were getting together for a cup of coffee. And when I heard that her pet name for V is Simba from the Lion King, well, I knew her beau V was going to be a cool guy, too.

These two met here on island and have been dating for 13 months. W just returned from a deployment and V is getting ready to PCS, so they wanted to get some photos taken before the big move coming up. I didn't mention tying the knot to them, but all I can think about is (you know the song) "if you like it then you'd better put a ring on it. oh oh ohh..."

W is oh so gorgeous, and V has the most adorable dimples I've ever seen.

They wore my favorite color, yellow, and they coordinated with the ocean so beautifully. I love the blue on the party barge with their outfits.

I love this one. I think it captures time spent here in Okinawa perfectly... The tile roof, shisa dogs, coral steps, and shadow of the palm tree. See it?

And last but certainly not least, a romantic kiss...

I had such a fun time with you guys this evening. V, I hope that you enjoy your next duty station, and W... well, girl, I'm taking you snorkeling!!

I got a new toy. It's a reverse ring, which allows me to flip my 50mm into a sort of makeshift macro lens. And it's been fun finding tiny things to photograph. It's not for photographing bugs or other tiny moving objects, but great for tiny still objects. Fun!!

This little guy E, is Mister Serious. Let me tell you! My goodness. This kid is so quiet, and those little eyebrows just say "leave me alone!" Not that he fussed even the least little bit, but it was tough getting him to crack a smile! I know where he gets that from, though... it's in his genes.

I did, however, get Dad to smile for me. He promised it wasn't that bad. Nothing sweeter than a Dad and his baby.

This is one of my faves. I think I want this one sitting on my coffee table!

Ahhh the story of a family... first there were one and one who became two...

And then there were three!

Just so you all know, I also do some events. I've done photos for Harvest Festivals, Christmas events, birthday parties, dance classes, and I'll be doing Easter photos in just a few weeks with the Bunny....

Over the last week or so (it took two days to finish up the shoot due to inclement weather), I've had the pleasure of photographing some youth girls dance teams. I've met some of the cutest and sweetest preteen and teenage girls I've ever known. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the group... it's been tough choosing which ones to post, as all of the girls are drop-dead-adorable!

These girls are so awesome... and so photogenic! And, who else can do THAT!? The girls had me in pain just watching them pose for their shots! This one has the most amazing blue eyes.

Can't you just see this girl's friends on the side making her giggle? Good job, girls! She was NOT going to smile!

I love the freckles on this girl. So beautiful!

And watch out, moms... I bet you're beating the boys away with sticks!

I could tell she's been dancing for a long time. Such fluid movements.
